“Long live the king” is traditionally proclaimed when a new leader ascends to the throne after the passing of the previous ruler. But that declaration could be referring to the same person if that king is, well, the King of Rock ’n’ Roll: Elvis Presley.

Though Presley has been gone (rumored “sightings” aside) for more than 30 years, he remains influential not only as a pop culture icon, but also as a thriving brand. Despite the launch of myriad new music styles, MTV and iPods, plus a succession of other surname-shedding singers—from Whitney to Britney—Elvis remains one of the world’s most popular personalities in any medium.
